In book two of Homers The Odyssey, a fierce debate springs up between Telemachus and Penelopes suitors. The two parties argue mainly over Penelopes future and her refusal to either reject all told the suitors or engage ane as her spouse. However, all throughout the debate, no unrivalled stops to ask Penelopes opinion or even stops to ponder the fact that she might conduct a say in the outcome of her future. Women living in ancient Greece such as Penelope had few rights and were viewed almost as property. The suitors see Penelope as a pillage, and the distinct best of boodles, with her lavish dowry, beauty, and high social status that would falsify them to become king. Instead of seeking a suitable bride, we take aim for the hills our hopes from day to day on the thought of the incomparable prize for which we are competing, (Homer, The Odyssey, 20, line 207). Penelope angers the suitors with her indecision to choose a suitor or reject them all, but sh e is in yet delicate of a position to make that choice, because it is unknown wether or not Odysseus is alive. If Penelope were to take a husband without inner that Odysseus was indeed alive, a large conflict would spring before upon his return.
However, if Penelope rejected all the suitors for Odysseus without knowing that he was dead, her straight ground would be left without a competent manlike principle and would inevitably fall into ruins. Yet another chore that the suitors reach to Penelope is the destruction of her home. In their impatience to deferment for her choice, they subvert upo n her property and privacy, eating her food,! suping her wine, and slaughtering her livestock. Too dreadful to demonstrate themselves at her fathers house, for Icarius to make footing for his misss hand with the claimant he prefers, they spend all day in and out of [Penelopes] house. They slaughter our oxen, our sheep, our fatted goats; they feast themselves and drink our sparkle wine- with never a thought for all the riches that is organism wasted...
